由于真空断路器开断较小电流。特别是开断空载变压器励磁电流等小感应电流时，往往会出现截流而产生截流过电压，并且截流值越大，产生的过电压越高。另外，真空断路器在开断电容器组的容性电流时，也很难达到绝对无电弧重燃，一旦出现重燃，也会产生重燃过电压。对于截流或者重燃过电压，需装用性能好的金属氧化物避雷器或阻容保护装置来预防。

真空灭弧室管内的真空度通常是在10-4-10-6Pa，随着真空灭弧室使用时间的增长和开断次数增多，以及受外界因素的作用，其真空度逐步下降，下降到一定程度将会影响它的开断能力和耐压水平。因此，真空断路器在使用过程中必须定期检查灭弧室管内的真空度。

对玻璃外壳真空灭弧室，可以定期目测巡视检查，正常时内部的屏蔽罩等部件表面颜色应很亮，在开断电流时发出浅蓝色弧光。当真空度下降很严重时，内部颜色就会变得灰暗，开断电流时将发出暗红色弧光。

触头超程和触头压力的控制

我国生产的10KV真空灭弧室规格有固定标准，触头超程越是3毫米，开距约是12mm。一般情况下，10KV断路器使用灭弧室的额定接触压力，具体的额定电流不等。

检测触头磨损值

真空灭弧室运作时，主要是触头进行开断奄滴，多次运作后，触头的接触面会进行放电进而磨损，导致触头运动的距离增加，与此同时，波纹管的工作形成也随之增加，减少使用寿命。一般情况下，触头磨损最大值约为3毫米，若是达到或超过此值，说明真空灭弧室已经不能继续使用。
